"There you go,If i can help you out, Thanks a lot, You're very welcome".
I just won.... I've got ten points here.. I didn't mean to do that! I wanted Heather to win! I had no idea, honestly! I'm really sorry.....
Settlers of Catan, find the 5 differences...
A friday night in Oosterhout, Holland. Six friends are assembling for a night "Settlers of Catan". It's quite a serious game and everybody is a little nervous about it. Jos, Saskia, Enrico, Kamiel, Elles en Marielle gather around the board that Enrico has put out. There is some discussion if he did it the right way, en Marielle is arguing with Elles about the colour of the houses they got, because she wants blue, her "lucky color" and Elles has those. Finally the game is starting. When it is Kamiel's turn to put down his first little village, he takes ages to decide, everybody gets tired of waiting and Jos decides to bring in the hourglass to limit the time very strictly. Kamiel argues about that but quickly puts down his village. Enrico decides to put his first village really close to Kamiel's, to hinder him. Kamiel protests, since it's not nice, but Enrico says there are no rules against it.
When it is Marielle's turn, she puts down her village, but then starts doubting about it and she wants to replace it. Jos firmly says that the rule is " once you put it down, it's set" No replacing allowed. She sighs and puts up with it. It's the wrong place and now she's never ever going to win anymore.....
'3' is rolled a lot with the two dices and Jos, being a mathematics teacher, finds that very unlogical. It's good luck though for Kamiel, who has both his villages on a '3', and he gets to get "wood" all the time. Since he is the only one who does get cards of "wood", he starts asking a lot for it when someone wants to trade with him. It seems very unfair, but business is business. It gives him the opportunity to build a city real quick. Enrico sees that he's doing really well, and encourages the others to boycot him and not trade with him any more. The atmosphere is becoming more and more agressive. Elles, Kamiel's girlfriend, does help him out with trading and the other's are all angry with her about that. Marielle's mood is starting to sink because since she didn't get to replace her village, it's in a bad spot and she doesn't get any cards period.
While everybody is focussing on hindering Kamiel as much as possible, to keep him from winning and ending the game, Enrico unexpectedly plays out three victory points and thereby wins the game. He jumps up in excitement while the others are powding and Marielle is thinking...that's the way it always goes!!!!
A fridaynight in Red Lake, Canada. Lesley and Doug have invited Heather, Shannon and her friend Marielle from Holland to come over and play a friendly game of Settler's.
There's red wine and nice food and everybody gathers around the board, chatting about.
Heather has never played it before, but everybody tries to explain the game to her. It gets hilarious when they all start talking at the same time and Heather get's all confused. She is reassured though that it will all work out well during the game.
It's time to start putting the villages at the board, starting with Doug who rolled the highest number with the dices. Everybody takes the time to think of their options, and they each help each other out to find the best spot. Doug accidentally puts his second house a bit close to Lesley's, but when she protests he appologizes and quickly takes it away to put it in another spot. Marielle is confused about the Dutch rule "once you put it down, it's set" but she doesn't want to mention it. This is Canada after all. They start playing and the first rounds everybody is happily gathering cards. The atmosphere is friendly and they try to help each other out as much as possible with trading so that each can start building houses and streets. Doug is doing really well and the others are admiring all his streets, he's got the longest road allready! Lesley gives Shannon a free card because she wants to help her out. Despite the fact that Heather's never played it before she's doing real well. Shannon even encourages Heather to build streets across her own, that's allowed and would be a good tactical move for her. Of course they all want her to win.
Marielle gets hold of some precious ore cards, and since she thinks she's got some valuable stuff she starts asking two cards of any kind for one card of ore. They all seem really surprised with this move and she feels ashamed. Everybody is so polite after all, "If i can help you out, Thank you very much, You're very welcome!" and there she is with her Dutch ruthlesness.
Therefore also she doesn't want to mention the possibility to boycot Doug, they all seem to hope for him to win pretty soon. But when it's Lesley's turn she builds a village, counts her cards, and then, with shamefull hesitation, she says" uhm.... I'm really sorry guys, but i think....I just won, I've got ten points! I didn't realise, I'm really sorry!!! I wanted Heather to win!!I'm really sorry!
Shannon tells her though to be happy that she won, it's great! Heather says happily that she really enjoyed the game anyhow, Doug is pretending to be powding over it, for fun, while Marielle is lying under the table laughing, thinking Canadians are sooooooo friendly...:-)

Jos:
Geweldig leuk stukje! -
